A Shadow MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s short story A Shadow presents a touching picture of grief, memory, and the different ways in which people cope with loss. The story revolves around Sambu, a young boy, and his mother, who are dealing with the death of Sambu’s father, a film actor whose last movie is now released after his death.
Sambu is full of excitement when he learns that he can see his father again on the cinema screen. For him, the film is a joyful opportunity to relive his father’s presence. He proudly tells his friends about his father’s role and eagerly goes to watch the movie. While watching, Sambu feels as if his father has returned to life. Every gesture, voice, and action on the screen reminds him of his real-life experiences. He becomes emotionally attached to the film and wants to watch it again and again, as it gives him a sense of closeness to his father.
In contrast, Sambu’s mother reacts very differently. For her, the film is not a source of comfort but of deep pain. She finds it unbearable to see her dead husband speaking, moving, and behaving as if he were still alive. It disturbs her emotionally because it brings back memories that she is trying hard to overcome. While Sambu finds happiness in the illusion, the mother sees it as a cruel reminder of reality.
As the story progresses, Sambu continues to enjoy the film, while his mother struggles silently with her sorrow. Finally, on the last day, she gathers courage and goes to watch the movie. However, during an emotional scene, she is overwhelmed by memories and faints in the theatre. This moment reveals the depth of her grief and the emotional burden she carries.
The story ends on a poignant note. Sambu is torn between his concern for his mother and his own sorrow at losing the chance to “see” his father again, as the film will no longer be shown. The title A Shadow is very meaningful—it suggests that what remains of the father is only a shadow, an image without real life.
