His most ambitious project is the Ibis Trilogy, which includes โSea of Poppies,โ โRiver of Smoke,โ and โFlood of Fire.โ These novels are set during the opium trade in the 19th century and show the deep links between India, China, and the British Empire.
Amitav Ghosh also writes powerful non-fiction. His book โThe Great Derangementโ questions why literature often ignores climate change. In โThe Nutmegโs Curseโ and โSmoke and Ashes,โ he connects colonialism with ecological damage and global trade.
He has won many awards, including the Padma Shri (2007), Jnanpith Award (2018), and Erasmus Prize (2024). His books are translated into over 30 languages.
