Amitav Ghosh Quiz : Amitav Ghosh is one of the most respected English-language writers from India. He was born on 11 July 1956 in Calcutta (Kolkata) and grew up in different countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Iran, as his father was in the army. Ghosh studied in Delhi University and later completed his PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford.

He began his writing journey with the novel “The Circle of Reason” in 1986. His next book, “The Shadow Lines”, received wide praise and won the Sahitya Akademi Award. Ghosh is known for mixing history, politics, and culture in his fiction. His famous novels include “The Calcutta Chromosome,” “The Glass Palace,” and “The Hungry Tide.”

His most ambitious project is the Ibis Trilogy, which includes “Sea of Poppies,” “River of Smoke,” and “Flood of Fire.” These novels are set during the opium trade in the 19th century and show the deep links between India, China, and the British Empire.

Amitav Ghosh also writes powerful non-fiction. His book “The Great Derangement” questions why literature often ignores climate change. In “The Nutmeg’s Curse” and “Smoke and Ashes,” he connects colonialism with ecological damage and global trade.

He has won many awards, including the Padma Shri (2007), Jnanpith Award (2018), and Erasmus Prize (2024). His books are translated into over 30 languages.
