An Astrologer’s Day MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s short story An Astrologer’s Day presents a simple yet interesting picture of human life, fate, and cleverness. The story takes place in a busy market town in South India. The central character is an astrologer who earns his living by telling fortunes to people sitting under a tamarind tree in the marketplace.

The astrologer has an impressive appearance. He wears a saffron turban, has sacred ash and vermilion on his forehead, and spreads a cloth before him with cowrie shells and charts. His bright and mysterious look attracts many customers. In reality, however, he does not have any real knowledge of astrology. He depends on his sharp observation, experience, and understanding of human nature. By carefully studying the faces and words of his customers, he makes guesses that often appear true to them.

One evening, when the market is about to close, a stranger approaches him. This man challenges the astrologer and demands that he should tell the truth about his life. At first, the astrologer tries to avoid him, but the man insists and even offers money for the prediction. The astrologer becomes nervous when he sees the stranger’s face because he recognizes him.

The stranger’s name is Guru Nayak. Many years ago, in a village, the astrologer had attacked this very man during a drunken quarrel and believed that he had killed him. Out of fear of punishment, the astrologer ran away from his village and began a new life as a fortune teller in another town. Seeing Guru Nayak alive shocks him deeply.

Thinking quickly, the astrologer tells Guru Nayak that the man who tried to kill him is already dead. He advises him to return to his village and never travel south again, otherwise danger may come to him. Guru Nayak believes the prediction and leaves satisfied.

After returning home, the astrologer happily tells his wife that he can now live peacefully because the man he thought he had killed is alive and gone far away. The story ends with a sense of relief and irony. Narayan shows how intelligence, presence of mind, and knowledge of human behaviour can sometimes be more powerful than real astrology.
