Anita Desai Quiz : Anita Desai is a well-known Indian writer who writes in English. She was born on 24 June 1937 in Mussoorie, India. Her father was Bengali and her mother was German, so she grew up speaking several languages including Hindi, German, and English. Anita Desai completed her B.A. in English Literature from the University of Delhi in 1957.

She started writing at a young age and published her first novel Cry, The Peacock in 1963. This novel made her famous because it focused on the inner feelings and mental struggles of women. Anita Desai is known for writing about family life, loneliness, women’s emotions, and the clash between modern and traditional Indian values.

Some of her other famous novels include Clear Light of Day (1980), Fire on the Mountain (1977), In Custody (1984), and Fasting, Feasting (1999). Fire on the Mountain won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978. Her novel In Custody was later made into a film and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Fasting, Feasting was also shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1999.

She has received many awards for her literary work. She was given the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2014. Anita Desai has also taught creative writing in several top universities in the USA like MIT.

Anita Desai is respected across the world for her contribution to Indian English literature and for giving voice to the deep emotions of Indian women.
