He shows little interest in political news but enjoys reading religious and philosophical ideas, which help him reflect on life. Every evening, he goes for a slow walk through familiar streets, carefully using his staff to avoid falling. His main aim is to remain steady and safe, as he knows one fall could end his life.
While walking in the market, people recognize him and talk about his past. As a young man, Rao was known as “Emden,” a strong, strict, and feared officer in the Excise Department. He behaved like a powerful authority figure, often punishing people harshly. Stories about his corruption, multiple marriages, and immoral behaviour are discussed by townspeople. This shows a contrast between his powerful past and his weak present.
One day, while reading his old diary, Rao comes across an entry from fifty-one years ago about a woman whose name begins with “S.” He recalls that he had treated her badly in anger and regrets his actions. This memory awakens a desire in him to find her and seek forgiveness. Filled with emotion, he breaks his usual routine and sets out to search for her house.
However, the town has changed completely. Streets, landmarks, and people from his past no longer exist. He fails to find the place or the woman. During this difficult journey, he loses his packet of sweets to a stray dog and returns home tired and disappointed. In the end, he reflects philosophically that perhaps the woman “S.” may have been reborn in another form, showing his acceptance of life’s mysteries.
The story beautifully shows the contrast between past pride and present loneliness. It highlights themes of ageing, memory, regret, and the passage of time in a gentle and thoughtful manner.
