Fellow-Feeling MCQ Quiz 20 Questions

Fellow-Feeling MCQ Quiz : Fellow-Feeling” is a humorous yet meaningful short story that takes place inside a crowded third-class compartment of the Madras–Bangalore train. The story shows how human sympathy, courage, and cleverness can appear in ordinary situations.

At the beginning of the story, the railway platform is full of noise and confusion. Passengers rush to board the train before it leaves. Among them is Mr. Rajam Iyer, who arrives at the last moment carrying his bedding and trunk. Since the compartment is extremely crowded, he manages to enter the train by climbing through the window. After the train starts and stops at the next station, many passengers get down and the compartment becomes less crowded. Rajam Iyer finally finds a seat opposite a thin and quiet passenger who soon lies down and curls himself up to occupy as little space as possible.

Later, a new passenger enters the compartment at Katpadi. This man is rude and aggressive. He becomes angry when he sees the meek passenger lying down and occupying space. The newcomer begins to insult and bully him. Rajam Iyer observes the situation quietly at first, but he cannot tolerate the unfair treatment. He decides to defend the helpless passenger and asks the bully to behave politely.

The argument between Rajam Iyer and the newcomer soon turns into a heated quarrel. The rude passenger begins to make insulting remarks about Brahmins and tries to provoke Rajam Iyer. The conversation becomes sharp and hostile, and both men finally stand up ready to fight. However, Rajam Iyer notices that the newcomer is much taller and stronger than him. Instead of using physical force, he cleverly frightens the man by pretending that he knows a dangerous jujitsu trick which can twist the opponent’s face.

Rajam Iyer describes in detail how he will slap the man’s cheek and pull his ear so that his mouth will move under his ear permanently. The newcomer, confused and frightened by this strange threat, becomes nervous. When the train stops at Jalarpet station, he quickly gets down and leaves the compartment.

After the bully departs, peace returns. Rajam Iyer kindly allows the meek passenger to lie down again. Through this simple railway incident, the story shows how courage, wit, and sympathy for others can defeat arrogance and cruelty. Narayan also gently highlights the importance of human kindness and the feeling of standing up for someone who cannot defend himself.
