Gateman’s Gift MCQ Quiz : “Gateman’s Gift” tells the story of Govind Singh, a simple and loyal man who had worked as a gatekeeper in a company office for twenty-five years. Before that, he had served in the war, and his military habits remained with him all his life. At the office gate he sat with pride in his khaki uniform, holding a short stick and saluting the General Manager whenever he arrived. Though the manager spoke to him only twice in his entire career, Singh felt deeply honoured and almost worshipped him like a god.
After many years of service, Singh retired because his eyesight and hearing had begun to fail. The company granted him a small pension of twelve rupees a month. His life after retirement was peaceful. The pension, along with the little income his wife earned by working in houses, was enough for their simple needs. Singh spent his days meeting friends and sitting at his cousin’s cigarette shop.
During this period he discovered a new talent. One day he repaired a child’s doll and realised that he had a gift for making small clay models. Soon he began creating beautiful miniature scenes of life—beggars, vendors, village people and street scenes. People admired his work and some of the models were sold in his cousin’s shop. Singh enjoyed this appreciation very much.
Out of respect and devotion, Singh started taking one model every month to his old office as a gift for the General Manager. The accountant always told him that the “Sahib liked it,” which made Singh very happy. Finally, he created his finest work—a model of the office building with himself standing at the gate and the manager arriving in a car.
A few days later he received a registered letter. Singh became extremely worried because he believed it must contain some complaint or punishment from the office. He refused to open it and wandered about asking people to guess its contents. His fear grew so much that people began to think he had lost his sanity. At last, believing himself to be mad, he behaved wildly in the streets and was even taken by a policeman.
At that moment the office accountant appeared and opened the letter. It contained praise from the General Manager and a reward of one hundred rupees for Singh’s artistic models. Hearing this, Singh felt great relief and happiness. However, the experience had frightened him so much that he decided never to make clay models again, believing such an activity was not suitable for a “sane” man.
