Iswaran MCQ Quiz 20 Questions

Iswaran MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s short story Iswaran presents a touching and psychological picture of a student who repeatedly fails in his Intermediate examination. Set in Malgudi, the story begins on the day when exam results are to be announced. While other students and their families are anxious and excited, Iswaran appears outwardly calm and careless. However, this calmness is only a mask hiding deep fear and insecurity.

Iswaran has failed several times, and because of this, he has become a subject of ridicule in both his family and society. His parents, who once sympathized with him, now treat his failure as something expected. Despite repeated failures, Iswaran continues to appear for the examination, showing strong determination mixed with false hope. On the day of the results, instead of checking the notice board, he goes to a cinema to avoid facing reality.

At the cinema, he tries to forget his worries by watching a mythological film. For some time, he succeeds in escaping his thoughts, but soon his anxiety returns. After the show, he goes to a hotel and falsely claims that he has passed. This shows his inner desire for success and respect.

Later, when he sees groups of successful students celebrating, he feels deeply ashamed and isolated. His sense of failure becomes unbearable, and he decides to end his life by drowning himself in the Sarayu river. Before doing so, he writes a farewell letter to his father.

However, before jumping into the river, he decides to take one last look at the results. At the Senate House, he carefully checks the list and is shocked to find that he has actually passed in second class. This sudden success fills him with extreme joy and excitement. He becomes overconfident and behaves like a victorious king, imagining himself riding horses.

In his uncontrolled excitement, he runs wildly along the riverbank and eventually jumps into the river, losing his life. Tragically, his death occurs not because of failure, but because of overwhelming emotional excitement after success.

The story highlights the dangerous effects of social pressure, repeated failure, and emotional instability. It shows how extreme emotions—both despair and joy—can lead to tragic consequences.
