There are mainly two types of sonnets: the Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet and the Shakespearean (English) sonnet. The Petrarchan sonnet is divided into two parts — the octave (first 8 lines) and the sestet (last 6 lines). It usually presents a problem in the octave and a solution in the sestet. The rhyme scheme is typically ABBAABBA for the octave.

The Shakespearean sonnet has three quatrains (4 lines each) and a final couplet (2 lines). Its rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. In this form, the poet often develops an idea in the three quatrains and gives a conclusion or twist in the final two lines.

Sonnets usually explore themes like love, time, beauty, death, and nature. Many great poets like Shakespeare, John Milton, and William Wordsworth have written beautiful sonnets.
