Macbeth Act 4 Quiz :
Brief Summary of Act 4 (Macbeth)
In Scene 1, the witches gather around a cauldron and cast a spell. Macbeth visits them, and they show him three visions. The first, an armed head, warns him to beware of Macduff. The second, a bloody child, says no man born of a woman can harm Macbeth. The third, a crowned child with a tree, says Macbeth will not be defeated until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. Macbeth feels safe but asks if Banquo’s family will rule. The witches show him eight kings followed by Banquo’s ghost, making Macbeth angry. Lennox then informs him that Macduff has fled to England. Macbeth decides to kill Macduff’s family.
In Scene 2, Lady Macduff is confused about why her husband left for England. Ross tells her Macduff is wise but does not reveal more. She tells her son that his father is a traitor, but he knows she is joking. A messenger warns her to run, but she refuses. Soon, murderers arrive, kill her son, and then kill her.
In Scene 3, Macduff meets Malcolm in England. Malcolm tests Macduff’s loyalty by pretending to be a worse ruler than Macbeth. When Macduff is disappointed, Malcolm reveals he was lying and is ready to fight Macbeth. Ross arrives with news that Macduff’s family is dead. Malcolm encourages Macduff to take revenge.
