Mother and Son MCQ Quiz with 20 Questions

Mother and Son MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s Mother and Son presents a simple yet touching picture of the strained relationship between a mother and her grown-up son, Ramu. The story mainly revolves around their emotional conflict, misunderstandings, and hidden affection.

The story begins during dinner when Ramu’s mother once again raises the topic of his marriage. She strongly suggests that he should marry her brother’s daughter, giving many practical reasons such as her old age, household burden, and the belief that marriage brings good fortune. However, Ramu shows no interest and dismisses her suggestions lightly. He is unemployed, has failed his studies multiple times, and feels frustrated with life. He dreams of marrying someone ideal like the heroines he has seen in films, which makes him reject his cousin.

The conversation soon turns into a heated argument. The mother, hurt by his refusal and rude behaviour, speaks harshly and declares that she will never interfere in his life again. Ramu, equally irritated, criticizes the food and his condition, which further angers his mother. Their exchange shows both ego and emotional distance.

After dinner, Ramu leaves the house without informing properly, leaving the door open. The mother initially feels angry at his carelessness, but soon her anger turns into worry. Alone at night, she reflects on her harsh words and regrets her temper. As hours pass and Ramu does not return, her fear grows. She imagines that her words may have driven him to suicide. This thought terrifies her, and she spends a restless night full of anxiety and guilt.

Early in the morning, unable to control her fear, she goes to the Kukanahalli Tank, imagining the worst. To her great relief, she finds Ramu sleeping peacefully on a bench. Overwhelmed with emotion, she wakes him up and brings him home. When Ramu tries to go near the water to wash, she stops him forcefully, still shaken by her fearful imagination.
