Mulk Raj Anand Quiz

Mulk Raj Anand Quiz : Mulk Raj Anand, born in 1905 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), stands tall among the pioneers of Indian English literature. Raised in a humble home—his father once a coppersmith-turned-soldier and his mother from a farming background—Anand absorbed both practicality and creativity from his parents. Life wasn’t easy; hardships and personal losses made him deeply sensitive to suffering, which later became the soul of his writing.

He studied at Khalsa College in Amritsar and later moved to London for higher studies, eventually completing a doctorate in philosophy. Though he could have taken up a stable teaching job, he followed his passion for literature. His first novel, Untouchable (1935), broke new ground by highlighting the painful life of Bakha, a lower-caste toilet cleaner. Such stories weren’t common in those days. Next came Coolie (1936), a moving tale of Munoo, a village boy lost in the harsh urban world. Anand didn’t stop there—his later works continued to reflect social realities like caste, hunger, and colonial injustice.

Anand was not just a novelist. He was also an editor, art critic, and social activist. His efforts were widely recognised—he received the International Peace Prize, Padma Bhushan, and Sahitya Akademi Award. Through novels like The Village and his autobiographical series, he brought India’s struggles to the world stage.

Alongside Raja Rao and R.K. Narayan, Anand is remembered as one of the ‘Big Three’ of Indo-Anglian fiction—his voice still echoing in classrooms, libraries, and hearts across generations.
