Nissim Ezekiel Quiz : Nissim Ezekiel (1924–2004) is known as one of the most important Indian poets writing in English. He played a big role in shaping modern Indian English poetry. He was born on 16th December 1924 in Bombay (now Mumbai) to a Bene Israel Jewish family. His father was a professor of botany and zoology, and education was highly valued in their home.
Ezekiel did his schooling at Antonio D’Souza High School and studied at Wilson College, University of Mumbai. Later, he went to London and studied philosophy at Birkbeck College in 1952. During his time in England, he developed a love for art, theatre, and literature.
His first poetry collection, A Time to Change (1952), marked the beginning of modern Indian poetry in English. His other famous works include Sixty Poems, The Unfinished Man, Hymns in Darkness, and Latter-Day Psalms, for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983. His poem Night of the Scorpion is especially famous and is taught in many schools and colleges in India.
Though mainly a poet, Ezekiel also wrote essays, plays, and literary criticism. His poems often reflect Indian life, culture, and the everyday experiences of common people. He also explored themes of identity, spirituality, and human weakness.
Nissim Ezekiel‘s simple yet powerful language, along with his honesty and humour, made him a true pioneer of Indian English poetry. He passed away in 2004, but his work continues to inspire students and poets across India and abroad.
