Present Simple Tense : introduction

The Present Simple Tense is the form of verb used to describe habitual actions or habits, general truths, situations that are not changing, timeless facts, routine activities, permanet states and events that are planned in near future. We also use the Present Simple Tense for scheduled future events, commands and sports commentaries. In this blog post we will cover forms, usage and examples of The Present Simple Tense.

Present Simple Tense Forms

Note: In the affirmative sentenses, the correct form of the verb is used based on the subject pronoun. In questions and negatives, auxiliary verbs “do” and “does” are used.

Spelling of Third Person Singular (verb) Forms :

Most verbs : We add -s to the base form of the verb.

read → reads

talk → talks

work → works

Verbs ending in consonant +y : We change y to i and add –es.

try → tries

carry → carries

reply → replies

But verbs ending in vowel + y : We do not change y to i and simply add -s.

pay → pays

Verbs ending in -s, -z, -ch, -sh, -x : We add –es to the base form of the verb.

kiss → kisses

buzz → buzzes

catch → catches

smash → smashes

fix → fixes

Present Simple Tense : Use

We use the Present Simple Tense to describe things that are always true (timeless truths), or to describe situations that exist now and will go on indefinitely(permanent situations).

Examples-

  1. It takes 20 minutes to reach the railway station.
  2. It always rains here in July.
  3. Trees grow more quickly in summer.

Present Simple Tense is used to talk about habits or things that happen regularly or on a regular basis:

  1. I leave my office at 6:00 most days.
  2. Each June we go to Mount Abu for a holiday.
  3. I play cricket evey Sunday.

We use Present Simple Tense when we talk about a series of events or actions that are completed. This tense is often used to tell stories, in live commentaries and in instructions:

  1. First I take a bowl and cut two onions into it.
  2. Neymar passes to Messi, Messi shoots – and it is a goal!
  3. Hemlet sees the ghost of his father. The ghost tells him….

Adverbs used in Present Simple Tense

In the Present Simple Tense, adverbs often indicate frequency or time. Here’s a list of common adverbs used in the Present Simple Tense:
