Type 1: Interrogative Sentences (Questions)

Rule Reminder: Change ‘said to’ to ‘asked‘. Use ‘if/whether‘ for Yes/No questions. Use the same Wh- word for Wh- questions. Change Question format to Statement format.

1. The manager said to the employee, “Why have you not submitted the report yet?”

Answer– The manager asked the employee why he had not submitted the report yet.

2. He said to me, “Where do you live?”

Answer– He asked me where I lived.

3. She said to Hari, “Are you a student?”

Answer– She asked Hari if he was a student.

4. My father said to me, “Why are you wasting your time?”

Answer– My father asked me why I was wasting my time.

5. The teacher said to the boy, “Have you done your homework?”

Answer– The teacher asked the boy if he had done his homework.

6. I said to him, “When will you return?”

Answer– I asked him when he would return.

7. She said to me, “Can you help me solve this sum?”

Type 2: Assertive Sentences (Statements)

Rule Reminder: Change ‘said to’ to ‘told’. Use connective ‘that‘. Change tenses (Present–> Past, Past –> Past Perfect).

21. She said to me, “I am cooking food.”

Answer– She told me that she was cooking food.

22. Ram said, “I have completed my work.”

Answer– Ram said that he had completed his work.

23. He said to me, “You are my best friend.”

Answer– He told me that I was his best friend.

24. The teacher said, “Gandhiji was born in 1869.”

Answer– The teacher said that Gandhiji was born in 1869. (Historical fact remains unchanged).

25. She said to him, “I did not go to school yesterday.”

Answer– She told him that she had not gone to school the previous day.

26. My friend said, “I will meet you tomorrow.”

Answer– My friend said that he would meet me the next day.

27. He said, “I can lift this box.”

Answer– He said that he could lift that box.

28. Sita said to Gita, “I am reading a novel.”

Answer– Sita told Gita that she was reading a novel.

Type 3: Imperative Sentences (Orders, Requests, Advice)

Rule Reminder: Change ‘said to’ to ‘ordered‘, ‘requested‘, ‘advised‘, or ‘forbade‘. Use ‘to‘ or ‘not to‘ as a connective.

41. The teacher said to the students, “Sit down.”

Answer– The teacher ordered the students to sit down.

42. The doctor said to the patient, “Take medicines on time.”

Type 4: Exclamatory Sentences (Emotion)

Rule Reminder: Change ‘said’ to ‘exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise’. Replace interjections (Hurrah, Alas, Wow) with the emotion.

61. He said, “Hurrah! We have won the match.”

Answer– He exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.

62. She said, “Alas! I am ruined.”

Answer– She exclaimed with sorrow that she was ruined.

63. The tourist said, “What a beautiful building it is!”

Answer– The tourist exclaimed with surprise that it was a very beautiful building.

64. The captain said, “Bravo! You played well.”

Answer– The captain applauded him saying that he had played well.

65. He said, “How fast you are walking!”

Answer– He exclaimed with surprise that I was walking very fast.

66. She said, “Oh! I lost my diamond ring.”

Answer– She exclaimed with sorrow that she had lost her diamond ring.

Rule Reminder: Change ‘said’ to ‘wished‘ or ‘prayed‘.

Answer– The old woman prayed that God might bless her son.

Type 6: Universal Truths & No Tense Change

Rule Reminder: If the statement is a universal truth, habitual fact, or if the reporting verb is in Present/Future tense, do NOT change the tense.

81. The teacher said, “The sun rises in the east.”

Answer– The teacher said that the sun rises in the east.

82. He said, “The earth is round.”

Answer– He said that the earth is round.

83. She said, “Honesty is the best policy.”

Answer– She said that honesty is the best policy.

84. He says, “I am ill.”

Answer– He says that he is ill. (Reporting verb ‘says’ is present).

85. Ram will say, “I have done my work.”

Answer– Ram will say that he has done his work. (Reporting verb is future).

86. The teacher said, “Two and two make four.”

Answer– The teacher said that two and two make four.

87. He said, “Man is mortal.”

Answer– He said that man is mortal.

88. She said, “Dogs bark at strangers.”

Answer– She said that dogs bark at strangers. (Habitual action).

Type 7: Advanced & Tricky Changes (Pronouns & Time)

Rule Reminder: Focus on precise pronoun swapping and time-word changes.

91. He said to me, “I shall return your book tomorrow.”

Answer– He told me that he would return my book the next day.

92. She said, “I bought this dress yesterday.”

Answer– She said that she had bought that dress the previous day.
