However, his mother uses a strong emotional weapon: her failing health. The local doctor, Dr. Kishen, tells Sambu that his mother has a weak heart and might not live long. Feeling a deep sense of guilt and duty, like the mythological Rama, Sambu decides to sacrifice his freedom and agrees to the marriage just to keep his “dying” mother happy.
But the story takes a sharp turn when Sambu hears two old men talking about getting a “second opinion.” He decides to take his mother to a big specialist, Dr. Natwar, in the New Extension part of town. After a series of expensive tests and high-tech check-ups, Dr. Natwar gives a surprising report: there is absolutely nothing wrong with his mother’s heart. She is perfectly healthy and might even outlive Sambu himself. Her fainting fits were simply due to exhaustion and not eating on time.
The irony is that Sambu’s plan backfires. Instead of being freed from the marriage by this news, he finds his mother more energetic than ever. Now that she knows she is healthy, she jumps into wedding preparations with double the speed.
The story ends with a helpless Sambu walking to the bus stand to receive the very relative he wanted to avoid. It is a classic Narayan tale that shows how a son’s attempt to be clever and modern eventually gets trapped by the simple, stubborn traditions of Indian family life.
