Selvi MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s Selvi presents the life of a great classical singer whose public glory hides her personal suffering. Selvi is admired across the country for her divine voice. After every concert, people crowd around her for autographs and darshan. To the public, she appears almost like a goddess of music. However, behind this fame stands her husband Mohan, who completely controls her life and career.
Mohan is not only her husband but also her manager, guide, and authority. He carefully builds Selvi’s public image by controlling her appearance, selecting her performances, fixing fees, and managing her publicity. Though he claims to follow Gandhian simplicity, he secretly uses cosmetics and clever strategies to enhance her appeal. He presents himself as the mastermind behind her success and believes that without his guidance, she would remain an ordinary girl from a poor background.
Selvi herself is quiet, obedient, and detached from worldly matters. She rarely questions Mohan’s decisions and lives almost like an instrument in his hands. She travels from place to place, performs according to his plans, and speaks only when required. Over time, Mohan isolates her from her own family, especially her mother who had taught her music. Gradually, Selvi loses contact with her roots and becomes a controlled celebrity living in a grand but lonely mansion.
Despite her fame, Selvi remains inwardly empty and emotionally suppressed. Her life changes suddenly when she receives news of her mother’s death. This moment awakens her inner self. She refuses to continue her scheduled performances and returns to her old home in Vinayak Mudali Street. There, she decides to stay permanently, rejecting Mohan’s authority for the first time in her life.
Mohan is shocked by this transformation. He tries to persuade her to return, reminding her of her commitments and fame. But Selvi remains firm. She chooses a simple life over luxurious confinement. She begins to sing freely for ordinary people without any fees, breaking away from the artificial world created by Mohan. Her music now becomes a source of personal expression rather than a commercial performance.
Mohan, who once controlled every aspect of her life, now finds himself helpless. His attempts to regain control fail completely. In the end, Selvi shuts him out of her life, refusing even to meet him. The story ends with Mohan’s defeat and Selvi’s silent assertion of independence.
