The Birthday Party Act 2 Quiz : Act II of The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter begins with tension and mystery. McCann is seen tearing a newspaper into strips, a symbolic and unsettling action. Stanley enters and shows reluctance to participate in the birthday celebration planned for him. McCann insists he stays, subtly blocking his exit and insisting that it will be an honour.

A strange conversation follows between Stanley and McCann, where Stanley tries to connect with him by mentioning places and memories, but McCann denies any association. Stanley speaks of returning home and his once peaceful life, but McCann’s coldness unsettles him. Stanley tries to question McCann’s intentions, growing increasingly nervous and paranoid.

When Goldberg enters, he dominates the scene with his nostalgic story and controlling behaviour. Petey, the only somewhat neutral character, exits the scene soon, leaving Stanley alone with Goldberg and McCann. What follows is a disturbing and aggressive psychological interrogation. They bombard Stanley with absurd, illogical questions, accusations, and contradictions, aiming to break his identity. Stanley, confused and defenceless, is accused of crimes and sins, even asked metaphysical riddles like the chicken-and-egg question.

The so-called birthday party begins in a surreal and disturbing way. Meg, wearing an evening dress, delivers a heartfelt but awkward toast. Goldberg and McCann further humiliate Stanley by turning the party into a performance. Lulu flirts with Goldberg, while the others pretend to be cheerful. The mood turns darker during a game of blind man’s bluff. Stanley is blindfolded, his glasses broken, and he steps on his beloved drum.

In a moment of violent breakdown, Stanley strangles Meg, nearly assaults Lulu, and is finally restrained. The act ends in darkness, confusion, and fear, revealing the terrifying power structures at play and Stanley’s total psychological collapse.
