The Birthday Party Plot Overview Quiz : Stanley Webber has been staying at a rundown boarding house owned by Meg and Petey Boles in an English seaside town. He rarely leaves the house and lives in isolation. Meg treats him like both a son and a lover, often fussing over his breakfast. One day, she tells him that two new guests are coming. Later, Lulu visits and talks to Stanley. She notices he hasnโt been outside in a long time and offers to go for a walk, but Stanley refuses. Suddenly, two strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive. They behave suspiciously and talk about a โjobโ they must do. Meg assumes they are friendly and decides to celebrate Stanleyโs birthday.
As the party begins, the atmosphere grows tense. Stanley is questioned aggressively by Goldberg and McCann. They ask him bizarre and personal questions, accusing him of crimes and confusing him deeply. Stanley breaks down mentally under pressure. Later, during a game, he breaks Megโs birthday gift (a drum), attacks her in confusion, and approaches Lulu violently before being stopped.
The next morning, Meg acts as if nothing happened. Goldberg claims Stanley had a nervous breakdown. When Stanley comes downstairs, he cannot speak or think properly. Goldberg and McCann plan to take him away, pretending to send him to a doctor. Petey tries to stop them, but fails.
In the end, Meg is unaware of Stanleyโs fate and happily remembers the party as if it was a grand success.
