The Doctor’s Word MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s short story “The Doctor’s Word” presents the moral struggle of Dr Raman, a well-known physician in Malgudi. Dr Raman has a reputation for speaking the truth to his patients. People usually call him only when a patient is very close to death because his consultation fee is high and his opinions are direct and final. He never gives false hope or comforting lies. According to him, pleasant words cannot save a dying person, so he always tells the truth about a patient’s condition.
One day Dr Raman faces a difficult situation when his closest friend, Gopal, falls seriously ill. The doctor has known Gopal since their childhood and their friendship has remained strong for forty years. Despite their busy lives, they occasionally meet and spend time together. Dr Raman realizes that he has not seen Gopal for several months until Gopal’s son comes to inform him that his father is dangerously sick.
Dr Raman immediately goes to Gopal’s house and examines him. After checking his condition, he understands that Gopal’s heart is extremely weak and that he may not survive the night. The doctor performs an operation and stays beside him, watching his pulse carefully. Though there are small signs of improvement, the doctor believes that they are temporary and that death may come at any moment.
Later, Gopal regains consciousness and asks Dr Raman an important question. He wants to know the truth about his condition because he wishes to sign his will before dying, so that his property can be properly settled for his wife and children. Gopal trusts Dr Raman’s honesty completely and believes that the doctor will never lie to him.
At this moment, Dr Raman faces a serious moral conflict. If he tells the truth, Gopal may lose hope and die sooner. If he encourages him, there is at least a small chance of survival. Finally, the doctor decides to break his lifelong rule. He tells Gopal confidently that his heart is strong and that he will live.
Encouraged by these words, Gopal becomes calm and falls asleep. The next morning, surprisingly, his condition improves and he begins to recover. Dr Raman himself is amazed that Gopal survives the attack. The story shows that sometimes hope and encouragement can become powerful medicine, even stronger than strict truth.
