The Edge MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s The Edge presents the life of Ranga, a wandering knife-sharpener in the town of Malgudi. Ranga is a simple, talkative, and carefree man who lives without concern for time, age, or worldly calculations. He earns his living by moving from street to street with his grinding wheel, calling out to people to sharpen their knives and tools. Though his work is humble, he takes pride in it and entertains customers with his lively speech and humour. His survival depends not only on skill but also on persuasion, patience, and sometimes clever tricks to attract customers.
Ranga lives a frugal life, spending very little on food and often relying on leftovers or small offerings from customers. Despite his poverty, he is content and does not complain about hardships. He stays in an abandoned building called Krishna Hall and sends part of his earnings to his family in the village. His thoughts are deeply connected to his daughter, whom he loves dearly. Unlike his wife, who believes in traditional roles for women, Ranga strongly supports his daughter’s education. He dreams of her becoming a doctor and living a better life than theirs.
Ranga’s past in the village reveals struggles with poverty, an exploitative blacksmith, and frequent quarrels with his wife. His decision to move to Malgudi is driven by the hope of earning more and supporting his daughter’s education. Though his wife refuses to move with him, Ranga accepts the separation and visits his family occasionally. These visits bring him happiness but also remind him of his responsibilities and emotional ties.
The turning point of the story comes when Ranga is offered a ride by a seemingly kind man. He is taken to a government camp under the promise of food, money, and a transistor radio. Innocent and trusting, Ranga agrees to cooperate without understanding the real purpose of the camp. Gradually, he realizes that he is being prepared for a sterilization operation as part of a population control programme.
When the truth dawns upon him, Ranga feels shocked and terrified. His simple trust is broken. In a moment of panic and self-preservation, he resists the officials, escapes from the operation table, and runs away shouting loudly. His powerful voice, which he once used to attract customers, now becomes his means of protest and survival.
