The Missing Mail MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s short story “The Missing Mail” presents a warm and touching picture of human relationships in the small town of Malgudi. The story mainly revolves around Thanappa, a friendly and talkative postman who becomes deeply involved in the lives of the people on his postal route.
Thanappa’s duty is to deliver letters in Vinayak Mudali Street and nearby roads. However, he is not an ordinary postman who simply drops letters and leaves. He spends time talking with people, sharing their joys and worries, and often gives advice. Because of his friendly nature, the residents treat him almost like a member of their family.
Among all the families on his route, Thanappa is especially close to Ramanujam, a clerk in the Revenue Division Office. Thanappa has known Ramanujam’s family for many years. He even brought the news when Ramanujam’s daughter Kamakshi was born. Over the years, he watches Kamakshi grow into a young girl and becomes personally interested in her future.
When Kamakshi reaches marriageable age, Ramanujam begins searching for a suitable groom. However, the process becomes difficult. Many proposals fail due to horoscope mismatches, dowry demands, or other reasons. Ramanujam grows worried and helpless as time passes. Seeing his distress, Thanappa actively helps in the search. He suggests a boy from Delhi and even brings the boy’s horoscope from another family.
Soon letters begin arriving frequently from the boy’s family. The proposal moves forward quickly. Finally, Ramanujam travels to Madras with Kamakshi to meet the groom’s family. The meeting goes well and the marriage is fixed for 20th May, which is the last auspicious date before the groom leaves for training for three years.
Preparations for the wedding become very busy. Thanappa helps Ramanujam with many arrangements and reduces his usual conversations with others so that he can assist the family. The wedding takes place successfully, and everyone is happy.
However, a few days later, Thanappa brings an old postcard and a telegram for Ramanujam. The postcard informs that Ramanujam’s uncle in Salem was seriously ill, and the telegram reports his death. Thanappa then makes a confession. He had actually received these messages before the wedding, but he deliberately kept them hidden because he feared that the bad news would stop the marriage.
Ramanujam becomes shocked and upset because he would have gone to see his uncle during his last moments. Thanappa admits that he may lose his job for this serious mistake. But he explains that he acted with good intentions to ensure Kamakshi’s marriage was completed.
In the end, Ramanujam decides not to complain against Thanappa. Though he disapproves of what the postman did, he understands that Thanappa acted out of genuine concern and affection for the family.
