The Tiger’s Claw MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s The Tiger’s Claw begins with the killing of a man-eating tiger that had terrorised villages around the Mempi forest for five years. The hunters who killed the tiger are treated like heroes, and a grand procession is organised in their honour. The villagers celebrate the end of fear and admire the dead tiger as a trophy.
At this moment, the Talkative Man interrupts and shares his own surprising experience with the same tiger. He narrates an incident from his past when he was working as a fertilizer company agent and had visited a remote village named Koppal. The place was small, isolated, and surrounded by dense forest. He stayed at a railway station managed by a simple station-master.
At night, due to lack of space in the house, he chose to sleep inside the station building, which was actually an old railway carriage. The station-master warned him about the danger of tigers in the area. During the night, he heard strange sounds and soon fell asleep. Suddenly, he was awakened when a tiger tried to enter the room. At first, he thought it was a dream, but soon realised the real danger.
In fear but with presence of mind, he quickly used the furniture in the room—a table, chair, and stool—to create a protective barrier around himself. The tiger attacked repeatedly, trying to reach him with its paws. The man defended himself bravely, using the chair as a shield. When the tiger pushed its paw inside, he used a knife lying nearby and cut off its claws. The struggle continued for hours, with both man and animal showing determination.
Finally, in the early morning, the arrival of people and a train frightened the tiger, and it ran away into the forest. The Talkative Man reveals that the tiger killed by the hunters was the same one, identified by the missing claws on its paw. Through his story, he quietly claims that he had faced the tiger alone and survived.
R. K. Narayan presents the incident in a lively and humorous way, making it both thrilling and entertaining.
