At a young age, Toru went to Europe with her family, where she studied French and Latin literature. She was deeply influenced by European Romantic poets like Wordsworth and Victor Hugo, but her heart remained rooted in Indian mythology and culture. Despite her short life—she died at just 21—her contribution to Indian English literature is remarkable.

Her most famous English work is Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (published posthumously in 1882). This collection beautifully retells Indian legends in lyrical verse. Another significant contribution is her French novel Le Journal de Mademoiselle d’Arvers—the first novel in French by an Indian.

Toru Dutt’s poetry reflects a blend of Indian tradition and Western form. Her verses are known for their emotional depth, spiritual insight, and love for her homeland. In an era when women’s voices were rarely heard, Toru emerged as a powerful literary figure.

Even today, she remains a symbol of India’s rich literary heritage. Her life inspires many young aspirants to rise above limitations and express themselves through literature.
