Trail of the Green Blazer MCQ Quiz : The story Trail of the Green Blazer by R.K. Narayan presents a lively scene of a crowded fair where people from different walks of life gather. Amid this noisy and colourful setting, a man in a bright green blazer attracts special attention. The main character, Raju, notices him immediately. Raju is a skilled pickpocket who moves cautiously in the crowd, always afraid of being caught by the police. Disguised as a villager, he studies people carefully, as stealing is his way of earning a living.

Raju prefers stealing purses rather than items like pens or watches, which he considers troublesome. When he sees the Green Blazer carrying a bulging purse, he decides to follow him. With great care and practice, he keeps the right distance so that he can watch the man’s movements without raising suspicion. Like a hunter tracking his prey, Raju patiently waits for the right opportunity.

After some time, he finally succeeds in stealing the purse in a crowded spot. He then moves to a quiet place and checks its contents. He finds some money, which he plans to use for his family. However, while preparing to throw away the empty purse, he notices a small balloon inside it. This reminds him of the man’s earlier words—that the balloon was meant for a motherless child.

This thought deeply affects Raju. For the first time, he feels sympathy and imagines the disappointment of the child. His conscience awakens, and he decides to return the purse with the balloon. However, when he tries to put it back secretly, he is caught by the owner. The man and the crowd misunderstand his intention and treat him as a criminal. He is beaten, arrested, and later punished by the court.

Even in jail, Raju keeps insisting that he was trying to return the purse, but no one believes him. His wife feels ashamed, and society laughs at his claim. After serving his sentence, Raju reflects on his life. He concludes that his hands are only skilled in stealing, not in returning things.

The story highlights the irony of human nature and society. It shows how a moment of goodness can go unnoticed, while past actions define a person’s identity forever. It also presents Narayan’s gentle humour and deep understanding of human behaviour. [Trail of the Green Blazer Audiobook]
