A Tale of Two Cities Book 1 Chapters 4-6 Quiz : In Chapter 4, Mr. Lorry reaches the Royal George Hotel at Dover. He waits for Lucie Manette and carefully tells her a shocking truth. Her father, Doctor Alexandre Manette, whom she believed to be dead, is alive. He has been kept secretly in a French prison for eighteen years. Mr. Lorry explains that he has come on behalf of Tellson’s Bank to bring the Doctor safely to England. Lucie is deeply disturbed by this news and becomes emotionally numb. A strong woman later known as Miss Pross rushes to help her.

Chapter 5 shifts the scene to the poor area of Saint Antoine in Paris. A wine cask breaks, and hungry people rush to drink the spilled wine. The red wine stains the street, clearly suggesting future bloodshed during the Revolution. Inside the wine-shop, Monsieur and Madame Defarge are introduced. They appear calm but serious. Mr. Lorry and Lucie arrive at the shop and are taken upstairs, where Doctor Manette is found sitting alone, making shoes in silence.

In Chapter 6, Doctor Manette is shown as a broken man. He does not even remember his own name and identifies himself only by his prison cell number. His mind is trapped in the prison even though his body is free. When Lucie speaks to him, her voice and golden hair slowly awaken his memories. He remembers his wife and finally accepts Lucie as his daughter. Her love comforts him and brings hope that he can return to life. Mr. Lorry quietly wonders if the Doctor can truly be “recalled to life.”
