A Tale of Two Cities Book 2 Chapter 5 to 8 Quiz : In Chapter 5, Sydney Carton is shown as a deeply unhappy man. He wakes up in a tavern and goes to Stryver’s chambers, where he does most of the hard legal work while Stryver enjoys success and praise. Both men studied together, but their lives have moved in different directions. Stryver has become ambitious and respected, while Carton remains careless and forgotten.

When they talk about Lucie Manette, Stryver admires her, but Carton hides his true feelings by calling her a “golden-haired doll.” As Carton walks home at dawn, he thinks sadly about how his life could have been better if he had discipline and purpose. He finally breaks down in loneliness and regret.

Chapter 6 shifts to the peaceful home of the Manettes in Soho, four months after the trial. Mr. Lorry, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton often visit them. Doctor Manette is improving, but memories of his prison life still trouble him. When Darnay tells a story about a prisoner who hid a paper in his cell, the Doctor reacts strongly, showing that his past imprisonment still haunts him. In the quiet evening, Lucie speaks about echoing footsteps, imagining future lives entering theirs. Carton adds that a large crowd will one day come into their lives, hinting at coming troubles.

Chapter 7 moves to France and shows the cruel and empty life of the French aristocracy. At a grand gathering, Monseigneur and other nobles display pride and selfishness. The Marquis St. Evrémonde later kills a poor child with his carriage and shows no sorrow. He throws a coin at the child’s father, treating human life as worthless. Defarge silently watches, representing the growing anger of the people.

In Chapter 8, the Marquis travels through dry and starving villages to his estate. He ignores the suffering peasants and refuses to help a poor widow at her husband’s grave. His cruelty and pride show how the ruling class has completely failed its people, preparing the ground for future revolt.
