The Marquis St. Evrémonde later kills a poor child with his carriage and shows no sorrow. He throws a coin at the child’s father, treating human life as worthless. Defarge silently watches, representing the growing anger of the people.
In Chapter 8, the Marquis travels through dry and starving villages to his estate. He ignores the suffering peasants and refuses to help a poor widow at her husband’s grave. His cruelty and pride show how the ruling class has completely failed its people, preparing the ground for future revolt.
