A Tale of Two Cities MCQ Quiz 20 Questions

A Tale of Two Cities MCQ Quiz : A Tale of Two Cities is a famous historical novel written by Charles Dickens. The novel is set in London and Paris between 1775 and 1792, a period of great political unrest, especially during the French Revolution. Through this story, Dickens shows how human lives are deeply affected by social injustice, violence, and change.

The novel opens with the well-known line, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” which clearly reflects the idea of duality—hope and suffering existing together. The story mainly focuses on Doctor Alexandre Manette, his daughter Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton. Each of these characters experiences a form of rebirth or resurrection.

Doctor Manette is released after spending eighteen years in a French prison. His long imprisonment has damaged his mind, and he often returns to making shoes, the habit he developed in jail. His daughter Lucie, through her love and care, helps him return to normal life. This shows the healing power of family and affection.

Charles Darnay, a French noble who rejects his family’s cruelty, is tried in England for treason. He is saved because Sydney Carton looks exactly like him, which creates doubt in the court. Carton is careless and unhappy with his life, but his love for Lucie brings out his hidden goodness. Although Lucie marries Darnay, Carton promises to sacrifice anything for her happiness.

The background of the French Revolution is very important in the novel. Dickens shows that the cruelty of the aristocracy forces the poor to rise in anger. However, he also warns that uncontrolled revenge leads to violence and loss of humanity. Characters like Madame Defarge represent blind revenge, while Lucie stands for love and compassion.

The novel finally suggests that personal sacrifice, love, and moral courage can give meaning to life even in the darkest times.
