It was one of the most famous wars in history, the Trojan War, that lasted for ten years. According to Greek myth, the strife between the Trojans and the Greeks started at the wedding of Peleus, King of Thessaly, and Thetis, a sea nymph. All of the gods and goddesses had been invited to the wedding celebration in Troy except Eris, the goddess of discord. She had been ignored from the guest list because her presence always gave rise to conflict. To take revenge, Eris decided to incite a clash. She threw a golden apple marked “for the most beautiful” into the middle of the banquet hall. All of the goddesses desired to possess it, which gave rise to a deadlock. Later, only three contestants – Hera, Athena and Aphrodite were left. The responsibility to settle the controversy was given to Paris, Son of King Priam of Troy. The three goddesses tried to bribe Paris. Hera promised to give vast kingdoms, Athena offered him victory and fame in war. Aphrodite offered him Helen, daughter of Zeus and the most beautiful mortal on earth. She was declared the winner of the golden apple. Although Paris learned that Helen was married, he nevertheless accepted the hospitality of her husband, King Menelaus of Sparta. Therefore, Menelaus was outraged after Paris departed, taking Helen and the King’s wealth back to Troy.
