  • Leland Brown: “Communication is the transmission and interchange of facts, ideas, feelings or course of action.”

Main Characteristics of Communication :

  • Needs at least two people.

  • A message is necessary.

  • Can be oral, written, or through gestures.

  • Must be understood by the receiver.

  • Can be formal or informal.

  • Flows in all directions – up, down, sideways.

Elements of Communication:

  • Sender, Message, Encoding, Channel, Receiver, Decoding, Feedback, and Noise (any disturbance).

Types of Communication:

  • Verbal: Spoken words.

  • Non-verbal: Body language, expressions.

  • Visual: Images, charts, videos.

  • Written: Emails, articles, letters.

  • Intrapersonal: Talking to oneself.

  • Interpersonal: Between two or more people.

  • Mass communication: Through media.

  • Formal & Informal, Vertical & Horizontal communication.

Effective communication is clear, concise, correct, and complete. But there are barriers like:

  • Semantic (language problems),

  • Psychological (emotions, anxiety),

  • Cultural (different backgrounds),

  • Physical (noise, poor visibility).

Teachers can improve communication by:

  • Using simple words,

  • Giving and taking feedback,

  • Showing empathy,

  • Knowing students well.

7 Cs of Communication: Clear, Concise, Concrete, Correct, Coherent, Complete, Courteous.

Communication Principles: Be ready, competent, choose the right media, give feedback, reduce barriers, and encourage mutual sharing.
