Concept Attainment Model Quiz : The Concept Attainment Model (CAM), developed by Jerome S. Bruner and his associates, is a teaching method that helps students learn concepts through examples. It assumes that people can naturally group things based on shared features. A concept is a category where items share specific qualities, called attributes, which have values. For example, in the concept of “apple,” apples are positive examples, while pears or oranges are negative. Attributes like colour can have values like red or yellow.
The model works in three phases:
- Phase I : The teacher presents data (examples and non-examples) to students, who identify the concept by comparing attributes and forming guesses about it.
- Phase II : Students test their understanding by identifying more examples and creating their own, with complexity increasing based on age (e.g., simple concepts like “cat” for young kids, complex ones like “social status” for older students).
- Phase III: Students reflect on their thinking strategies, analyzing how they reached the concept and whether their approach changed.
CAM promotes conceptual learning, not rote memorization, and is widely used in teaching grammar and science. It encourages inductive reasoning, helps students understand concepts better, and improves their thinking strategies. The teacher guides the process, using supportive materials like charts to present examples clearly. This model suits all age groups and strengthens studentsโ prior knowledge.
