Finally, he escapes and walks all the way to Dover to seek help from his strong-willed aunt, Miss Betsey Trotwood. She becomes his guardian and gives him a chance to study again. David studies in Canterbury and lives with Mr. Wickfield and his daughter Agnes, who later becomes very important in his life. David strongly dislikes Uriah Heep, Wickfield’s dishonest clerk.

As David grows up, he becomes a proctor and falls in love with Dora Spenlow. They marry, but Dora is childish and weak, and their marriage lacks understanding. Dora later dies, leaving David deeply changed. Meanwhile, Uriah Heep’s crimes are exposed by Mr. Micawber, and justice is restored.

Parallel to David’s story runs the tragic tale of Little Em’ly, who runs away with Steerforth. Steerforth later abandons her, and she is finally taken to Australia by Mr. Peggotty to start a new life. Ham, who loved Em’ly, dies heroically while trying to save people from a shipwreck. Steerforth also dies in the same storm.
