FORTY-FIVE A MONTH MCQ Quiz 20 Questions

Forty-five a Month MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s story “Forty-Five a Month” presents a touching picture of middle-class life, focusing on the emotional conflict between duty and family love. The story mainly revolves around little Shanta and her father, Venkat Rao.

Shanta, a young schoolgirl, is eagerly waiting for the evening because her father has promised to take her to the cinema. She becomes restless in class and repeatedly asks about the time. Unable to read the clock properly, she mistakenly believes it is already five o’clock and persuades her teacher to let her go home early. Her excitement shows the innocence and simplicity of childhood.

At home, Shanta quickly prepares herself for the outing. She insists on wearing her favourite dress and decorates herself carefully, imagining how happy her father will be to see her ready. She waits at the gate for a long time, growing impatient and anxious as her father does not return. Her longing is so strong that she even tries to find his office on her own, but gets lost and is finally brought back home by a familiar servant. This incident highlights her deep affection for her father and her strong desire to spend time with him.

Meanwhile, Venkat Rao is shown as a hardworking but overburdened clerk. He earns a small salary and feels trapped in his job, which demands long hours and gives him little time for his family. Though he sincerely wishes to fulfil his promise to Shanta, his strict manager forces him to stay back in the office to complete work. In frustration, he even writes a resignation letter, valuing his child’s happiness more than his job. However, when he learns that he is about to receive a small increment, he withdraws his resignation. This moment shows his helplessness and the harsh reality of financial dependence.

By the time Venkat Rao returns home late at night, Shanta has fallen asleep, still dressed in her best clothes, waiting for him. This sight deeply moves him, but he realizes that his circumstances may never allow him to give enough time to his child. [ Forty-five a Month Audiobook ]
