Malgudi Days Plot Summary MCQ Quiz with 20 Questions

Malgudi Days Plot Summary MCQ Quiz : Malgudi Days is a famous collection of short stories written by R. K. Narayan. It was first published in 1943 by Indian Thought Publications, a press started by Narayan himself during the Second World War. Due to the war, Indian writers had limited access to foreign publishers, and this press helped Indian literature reach Indian readers. The book was later published internationally in 1982.

The collection contains 32 short stories, all set in the imaginary town of Malgudi in South India. Each story presents ordinary people and everyday situations, showing Indian life with simplicity, humour, and quiet irony. Malgudi becomes a living town where readers meet teachers, clerks, beggars, doctors, children, and animals.

Several stories highlight human cleverness and weakness. In “An Astrologer’s Day,” a poor man survives by pretending to be an astrologer and escapes danger using intelligence. “The Missing Mail” shows the kindness of a postman who delays bad news to protect a happy marriage. “The Doctor’s Word” explores faith and truth when a doctor lies to give hope—and a miracle follows.

Some stories focus on moral lessons and emotions. “Father’s Help” shows young Swami learning honesty through his father’s guidance. “Leela’s Friend” highlights innocence and misunderstanding when a servant is wrongly blamed. “The Blind Dog” presents cruelty and loyalty through a beggar and his dog.

Other stories deal with fate and irony. In “Iswaran,” success comes too late and ends in tragedy. “Engine Trouble” shows how sudden luck brings trouble instead of happiness. Stories like “Gateman’s Gift” and “Such Perfection” reflect life after retirement and human pride.
