Paradise Lost Book 1 Lines 1-124 MCQ Quiz by Gyankundli

Paradise Lost Book 1 Lines 1-124 MCQ Quiz : Paradise Lost opens with the poet clearly stating the subject of his epic. He says that the poem is about man’s first disobedience. Adam and Eve disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit, and as a result, they lose the Garden of Eden. This act brings sin, death, and suffering into the world.
Milton explains that this disobedience was caused by Satan, the fallen angel. Satan tempts Eve and becomes the reason for humanity’s downfall. However, Milton also reminds readers that God had already planned salvation for mankind through divine grace.
The poet then declares the main purpose of the poem. He wants to justify the ways of God to human beings. Milton wishes to show that God is just and fair, even when humans suffer because of their own actions.
After announcing the theme, Milton invokes the Heavenly Muse. Unlike classical poets who call upon Greek goddesses, Milton calls upon the Holy Spirit, who inspired Moses on Mount Sinai. He believes this divine power can help him tell a story that is greater than the ancient epics of Greece and Rome.
Milton humbly asks for divine guidance because he is physically blind. He requests God to give him inner light so that he may see spiritual truths and present them clearly to the readers.
The poem then moves to the scene in Hell. Satan and his followers are shown lying defeated after their rebellion against God. They are surrounded by darkness, fire, and deep suffering. Although Satan has lost Heaven, he has not lost his pride or courage. This prepares the reader for Satan’s important role in the epic.
