Tagore wrote in many genres—poems, short stories, novels, plays, essays, songs, and also painted. He introduced fresh and simple language in Bengali literature and brought Indian culture to a global audience. In 1913, he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for his collection Gitanjali (translated as Song Offerings).

Tagore also composed about 2,200 songs, now known as Rabindra Sangeet. These songs blend classical, folk, and Western styles with rich poetic feeling. Additionally, he penned the Indian national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” and the Bangladeshi anthem “Amar Sonar Bangla”.

Rabindranath Tagore founded Santiniketan, an experimental school, in 1901, which later became Visva-Bharati University. This was his effort to build a learning place rooted in nature, freedom, and both Indian and Western values.

He passed away on 7 August 1941 in Calcutta. His legacy is vast—from literature and art to education and music. He remains one of India’s greatest cultural icons, beloved by students, poets, and readers everywhere.
