The Axe MCQ Quiz with 20 Questions

The Axe MCQ Quiz : R.K. Narayan’s The Axe presents the life of Velan, a poor village boy whose destiny changes in an unexpected way. At the beginning, an astrologer predicts that Velan will one day live in a grand three-storeyed house surrounded by a large garden. People laugh at this prophecy because Velan belongs to a very poor family. However, many years later, this prediction becomes true, though in a different sense.

After a quarrel with his father, Velan leaves his village and reaches Malgudi. There he struggles for survival until an old gardener gives him work. The land they work on is barren and covered with weeds. Velan works very hard, clearing the land and nurturing plants. Slowly, a beautiful garden begins to take shape, along with a grand house being built beside it. When the old gardener falls ill, Velan takes full responsibility and becomes the chief gardener.

Velan develops a deep emotional bond with the garden, especially with a margosa tree that he plants and cares for like his own child. Over time, the house and garden become lively, filled with people, birds, and children. Years pass, and both Velan and the family grow old. Life seems peaceful and settled.

However, after the death of the house owner, things begin to change. The sons of the owner neglect the property and eventually leave. New tenants come and go, but none respect the garden. Gradually, the house falls into ruin and becomes known as a haunted place. Velan, now old and weak, continues to live there, almost like its caretaker and silent owner.

Finally, the property is sold to a company that plans to demolish the house and clear the garden to build small houses. Velan is asked to leave. When workers begin cutting down the trees, especially the margosa tree, Velan is heartbroken. He pleads with them to stop, calling the tree his child. Before leaving, he requests them to wait until he goes far away so that he does not hear the sound of the axe.
