Tughlaq Scenes 4–6 MCQ Quiz : Scene 4 is set inside the palace during the Sultan’s absence. Shihab-ud-din manages the administration, while the Sultan’s stepmother anxiously waits for news from the battlefield. The arrival of Muhammad Tughlaq shocks her because he did not inform her earlier. Soon, the tragic news of Sheikh Imam-ud-din’s death is announced.

The Sultan calmly declares that the Sheikh is dead and shocks everyone further by forgiving Ain-ul-Mulk merely because he solved a chess problem quickly. After the Sultan leaves, Ratan Singh reveals the terrible truth to Shihab-ud-din. The Sheikh was deliberately used as a decoy. Dressed like the Sultan and seated on a royal elephant, he was sent to negotiate peace. A planned trumpet signal caused confusion, leading to a sudden attack. The Sheikh was killed, and the enemy army, believing the Sultan dead, chased the fleeing soldiers. They were then trapped and destroyed by the Sultan’s hidden forces.

This scene exposes Muhammad Tughlaq as a master of deceit. He eliminates his enemies cleverly, pretends to mourn the Sheikh, and places the blame on Ain-ul-Mulk. His cruelty, cunning mind, and political manipulation become clear.

Scene 5 shifts to a house in Delhi where Amirs, Sayyids, Shihab-ud-din, and Ratan Singh discuss the Sultan’s policies. The Amirs believe that shifting the capital to Daulatabad is meant to weaken them. Sheikh Shams-ud-din strongly criticises the Sultan for oppressing religious leaders and narrates how people were threatened to prevent them from attending Sheikh Imam-ud-din’s speech.

The people of Delhi do not want to leave their city. Ratan Singh then proposes a bold plan to kill the Sultan during prayer time, as weapons are not allowed then. Though some hesitate, he justifies it by calling the Sultan a tyrant. Finally, Shihab-ud-din agrees. This scene shows that public anger and religious opposition against the Sultan have reached a dangerous level.

Scene 6 takes place in the royal court. The Sultan announces new policies—shifting the capital, introducing copper currency, and inviting a holy Abbasid guest. Though the Amirs doubt him, they pretend loyalty. During prayer, when the conspirators move to attack, hidden soldiers suddenly surround them. The Sultan had already received a warning letter from Ratan Singh.

Shihab-ud-din realises he has been betrayed. The Sultan kills him brutally and later declares him a martyr to hide the truth. He orders mass punishment, bans prayer temporarily, and forces the people of Delhi to migrate. This scene highlights the Sultan’s sharp intelligence and absolute ruthlessness.
