Father’s Help MCQ Quiz : The story Father’s Help presents a humorous yet meaningful picture of a schoolboy’s fear, imagination, and moral confusion. The central character, Swaminathan (Swami), wakes up on a Monday morning feeling unhappy because he does not want to go to school. Like many children, he tries to avoid school by pretending that he has a headache. His mother believes him and allows him to stay at home, but his strict father does not accept this excuse and forces him to go.
To escape punishment for being late, Swami creates a false and exaggerated story about his teacher Samuel. He describes Samuel as a very cruel and violent man who beats students badly. Instead of showing sympathy, Swami’s father becomes angry and writes a strong complaint letter to the headmaster against Samuel. He forces Swami to deliver this letter at school.
On his way to school, Swami begins to feel guilty. He realizes that he may have lied or exaggerated about Samuel’s behavior. His conscience troubles him, and he starts thinking that Samuel is not such a bad teacher after all. He even recalls that Samuel is sometimes kind and friendly.
At school, Swami plans to provoke Samuel so that the teacher behaves violently and justifies the accusations in the letter. However, Samuel behaves unexpectedly in a calm and gentle manner. He does not punish Swami harshly, even when he comes late or fails to complete homework. This makes Swami more confused and regretful.
Finally, Swami deliberately misbehaves in class until Samuel punishes him with a few cane strokes. Swami feels relieved because now he thinks the letter may seem justified. But fate changes everything. When he goes to deliver the letter, he finds that the headmaster is absent and Samuel himself is the acting headmaster. Frightened, Swami runs back home without delivering the letter.
At home, his father tears the letter and scolds him for being cowardly. The story ends with irony, showing the gap between imagination and reality. It highlights a child’s psychology, fear of authority, and the importance of truth.
