It also helps in giving background information (exposition) and guides the audienceโs response to events in the play.
Soliloquy was not very common in Classical drama, but it became highly popular during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. Playwrights like William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe used it with great skill. Some of the most famous examples include Hamletโs โTo be or not to be,โ Macbethโs speeches revealing his ambition and guilt, and the emotional soliloquies in Othello. Marloweโs Doctor Faustus begins and ends with powerful soliloquies showing Faustusโ mental struggle.
Another important use of soliloquy during this period was in the development of villains. Characters like Iago in Othello, Richard III, and Barabas in The Jew of Malta use soliloquies to reveal their evil plans directly to the audience. These speeches often work like extended asides and make the audience aware of the villainโs intentions, even when other characters remain unaware.
A related device is the aside, which is a short speech spoken to the audience and not heard by other characters. The key difference is that a soliloquy is longer and spoken when the character is alone, while an aside is brief and occurs in the presence of others.
In later periods, especially towards the end of the 19th century, soliloquy became less common because drama moved towards realism. Playwrights preferred more natural ways to show thoughts. However, some modern writers like T. S. Eliot and Eugene OโNeill continued to use and adapt this technique.
It is important to note that a soliloquy is a type of monologue, but not all monologues are soliloquies. A soliloquy requires the speaker to be alone.
