Such Perfection MCQ Quiz : “Such Perfection” from Malgudi Days presents the story of Soma, a devoted sculptor who spends five years creating a flawless image of Lord Nataraja. He works in complete secrecy, isolating himself from the outside world, because he wants to achieve absolute perfection. When the statue is finally completed, Soma is overwhelmed by its beauty and divine presence. He feels that it will bless humanity for ages.
However, the idea of “too much perfection” soon creates fear. A stranger who secretly observes the statue warns Soma that such perfection is dangerous for ordinary humans. According to him, a perfect divine form cannot be handled by mortals. When the news spreads in the village, people become anxious and superstitious. Even the temple priest refuses to install the statue, saying that its divine power may destroy human life unless it is slightly damaged.
Soma refuses to harm his creation. He takes pride in his work and believes that the image is meant for the people. Ignoring warnings, he decides to consecrate the statue publicly. On the full moon day, a huge crowd gathers, and the unveiling of the statue becomes a grand event. As the rituals begin, the image appears alive, symbolising the cosmic dance of creation and destruction. The crowd is spellbound.
Suddenly, nature turns violent. A terrible storm breaks out with thunder, lightning, floods, and destruction. People panic and believe that the disaster is caused by the presence of the perfect image. They blame Soma and beg him to destroy a small part of the statue to save their lives.
Soma faces a deep inner conflict between his artistic devotion and social responsibility. He cannot bring himself to damage his masterpiece. Finally, he decides to sacrifice his own life instead of harming the image. But before he can act, fate intervenes—a falling tree accidentally breaks the toe of the statue.
With this slight imperfection, the danger seems to pass. The villagers accept the statue, and it is installed in the temple. Soma receives honour and recognition but never sculpts again. [ A story from Malgudi Days]
