A Tale of Two Cities Book 3 Chapters 9 to 12 Quiz : In Chapter 9, tension increases as Mr. Lorry becomes angry on discovering Jerry Cruncher’s grave robbing activities. Jerry does not fully accept his crime but promises to change his life and suggests that his son can work at Tellson’s Bank. Meanwhile, Sydney Carton quietly prepares for something important. He tells Mr. Lorry that he can only manage to get access to Charles Darnay in prison. Seeing Mr. Lorry’s emotional state, Carton speaks kindly and respectfully to him, almost like a son. That night, Carton walks alone in the streets, deeply thinking, while the words “I am the resurrection and the life” echo in his mind. This shows that he has made a serious and secret decision. He also visits a chemist shop, hinting at his hidden plan.

In Chapter 10, Darnay’s trial begins again. The shocking truth is revealed through a letter written by Doctor Manette during his imprisonment in the Bastille. The letter describes a cruel incident from the past. Two noble brothers of the Evrémonde family had destroyed a poor peasant family. They raped a young woman, killed her relatives, and silenced Doctor Manette when he tried to report the crime. Before dying, the peasant family cursed the Evrémondes. The Doctor had written this truth in a letter, but the Evrémonde brothers imprisoned him to hide it. Now, this same letter becomes the reason for Darnay’s death sentence, even though he is innocent. The sins of his family fall upon him.

In Chapter 11, the emotional impact of the sentence is shown. Lucie is heartbroken but remains strong to support her husband. She is allowed to meet Darnay one last time, and their farewell is full of love and sorrow. Doctor Manette loses control and falls back into his old mental weakness. At this moment, Sydney Carton stands calm and firm. He comforts everyone and takes charge of the situation. When he carries the fainted Lucie, his actions show quiet determination. His earlier promise—to give his life for someone she loves—now seems close to becoming reality.

In Chapter 12, Carton visits the Defarges’ wine shop. There, he overhears a dangerous plan. Madame Defarge reveals that she is the sister of the peasant woman who suffered at the hands of the Evrémonde family. Her hatred is deeply personal, and she wants complete revenge—not only against Darnay but also against Lucie and her daughter. Carton quickly understands the danger and informs Mr. Lorry. At the same time, Doctor Manette again becomes mentally unstable. Carton takes control and instructs Mr. Lorry to arrange a carriage and passports, showing that he is ready to act on his secret plan.
