A Tale of Two Cities Book 3 Chapters 5 to 8 Quiz : In Chapter 5, Lucie proves her deep love and strong courage. Every day, she stands near the prison for hours, hoping that her husband, Charles Darnay, may catch a glimpse of her. The place is not safe, as a cruel woodcutter, who was once a road-mender, troubles her by making frightening gestures of cutting off heads. Still, Lucie remains calm and wise. Instead of reacting with fear, she handles him politely and even gives him money to avoid trouble. One day, a wild crowd surrounds her, dancing madly, but she does not lose control. At that moment, Doctor Manette tells her that Darnay is watching from the prison, and she sends him a loving gesture. This scene shows Lucieโs bravery and her ability to stay strong in difficult times.
In Chapter 6, Darnayโs trial takes place. He speaks clearly and defends himself well, but the jury is not easily convinced. It is only when Doctor Manette and Mr. Lorry speak in his favour that the decision changes. Suddenly, the same crowd that wanted his death begins to celebrate his freedom. This quick change shows how unstable and emotional the public is. Darnay returns home, where he shares an emotional reunion with Lucie and their child. The family thanks God together, and Doctor Manette feels proud that he could save his son-in-law. However, this happiness does not feel secure, as Madame Defarge is quietly watching and recording everything, suggesting that danger is still near.
In Chapter 7, the fear becomes real. Even though Doctor Manette believes that Darnay is safe, Lucie cannot forget the risks. Her fear proves correct when four men arrive and arrest Darnay again. This time, the accusation comes from Monsieur and Madame Defarge and another unknown person. The sudden arrest destroys the familyโs peace and shows the cruel power of the revolutionaries. Madame Defargeโs actions reveal her cold and merciless nature, as she allows Darnay a short moment of happiness only to take it away again.
In Chapter 8, new connections begin to form. Miss Pross meets her brother, who is revealed to be John Barsad, a spy. Sydney Carton appears and cleverly uses this secret to control Barsad. With the help of Jerry Cruncher, who exposes another spyโs fake death, Carton gains strong power over Barsad. He forces him to cooperate, especially because Barsad has access to the prison. This moment is important because it prepares the ground for future events and shows Cartonโs growing role in the story.
