David Copperfield Chapters 1 to 4 Quiz : The novel begins with the birth of David Copperfield in a quiet village called Blunderstone. His birth takes place at midnight on a Friday, which some people consider unlucky. Before his birth, his mother, Clara Copperfield, receives a sudden visit from Miss Betsey Trotwood, a strong-willed and strange aunt of Davidโs late father. She firmly believes that the child will be a girl and plans to name her Betsey Trotwood Copperfield.
However, when the baby turns out to be a boy, she becomes disappointed and leaves the house without a word. This early incident shows her rigid nature and also adds a touch of humour to the story.
David grows up in a loving environment with his gentle and childish mother and their loyal servant, Peggotty, who cares deeply for him. His early childhood is peaceful and full of small joys. He remembers his house, the churchyard where his father is buried, and the warmth of Peggottyโs affection. However, this happiness begins to change when a man named Mr. Murdstone enters their lives. David immediately dislikes him. Peggotty also warns that Mr. Murdstone is not a suitable match for Davidโs mother.
Soon, Peggotty takes David to her brotherโs house in Yarmouth. This visit becomes one of the happiest periods of his childhood. The Peggotty family lives in a converted boat, which, though simple, is full of warmth and kindness. Here, David meets Mr. Peggotty, Ham, and little Emโly, an orphan girl. David forms a close bond with Emโly, and their innocent friendship brings him great joy. The contrast between this loving environment and his own home becomes clear.
When David returns home, he finds that everything has changed. His mother has married Mr. Murdstone, and the house now feels cold and strict. Mr. Murdstone soon shows his harsh nature. His sister, Miss Murdstone, also arrives and takes control of the household. Together, they dominate Davidโs mother and treat David with cruelty. His mother becomes weak and fearful, losing her independence completely.
Davidโs life turns miserable under their control. Mr. Murdstone believes in strict discipline and punishes David severely. During one such punishment, David bites him in anger, which leads to even harsher treatment. He is locked in his room for several days, feeling lonely and helpless. Peggotty remains his only source of comfort, secretly speaking to him and offering support.
Finally, Mr. Murdstone decides to send David away to a school near London. As David leaves home, his mother, full of sorrow, blesses him and asks for his forgiveness. This moment marks the end of Davidโs innocent childhood and the beginning of a difficult phase in his life.
