David Copperfield Chapters 5 to 8 Quiz : David begins his journey away from home with a heavy heart. Soon after leaving, Peggotty secretly meets him on the road, hugs him lovingly, and gives him cakes and some money sent by his mother. This emotional moment shows the deep affection David receives from Peggotty and his mother.
During the journey, Mr. Barkis, the slow and quiet cart driver, behaves kindly toward David. He asks about Peggotty and sends a strange message: โBarkis is willinโ.โ David does not understand its meaning at this stage.
At Yarmouth, David is left at an inn where he is treated poorly. The waiter frightens him with strange stories and even eats most of his food. This incident shows Davidโs innocence and how easily he is cheated in the outside world.
David then travels to London, which he finds confusing and frightening. No one comes to receive him, and he feels abandoned. Later, Mr. Mell, a poor and kind schoolmaster, takes him to Salem House.
Salem House is in a miserable condition, dirty and unfriendly. David is punished by being sent early, when other boys are on holiday. When school begins, he meets harsh headmaster Mr. Creakle, who believes David is a troublesome boy. David also meets Tom Traddles, a kind student, and James Steerforth, a charming and confident senior boy. David quickly admires Steerforth and becomes his friend, even trusting him with his money.
Life at Salem House becomes painful. Mr. Creakle is extremely cruel and beats students regularly. The environment is full of fear, noise, and suffering, making learning almost impossible. Poor Traddles suffers daily punishment, yet remains gentle and good-hearted.
A major incident occurs when Steerforth insults Mr. Mell, calling him poor and worthless. When Mr. Creakle supports Steerforth, the truth about Mr. Mellโs poor mother comes out (a secret David had unknowingly shared). As a result, Mr. Mell is dismissed. This shows Steerforthโs selfish and cruel nature.
Later, Mr. Peggotty and Ham visit David, bringing gifts and news from home. Steerforth meets them and impresses them with his polite behaviour. However, this meeting hints at future trouble.
When the holidays arrive, David returns home. He again meets Mr. Barkis, who repeats his marriage proposal message for Peggotty. At home, David is shocked to see his mother with a new baby boy. Though he enjoys a brief happy time with his mother and Peggotty, he notices that his mother looks weak and anxious.
The Murdstones soon return, bringing strictness and coldness back into the house. David feels unwanted and uncomfortable. He is scolded even for simple actions and is not allowed to spend time freely. Gradually, he feels separated from his mother.
The holidays pass sadly, and David leaves again for school. This time, he does not feel unhappy about going back. It is also hinted that he will never see his mother again.
