David Copperfield Chapters 21 to 24 Quiz : In these chapters, David’s life connects his past at Yarmouth with his present friendship with James Steerforth. During his stay at Steerforth’s house, David is impressed by Littimer, the servant, who appears very respectable and disciplined.
David and Steerforth travel to Yarmouth. There, David meets old friends like Clara Peggotty and finds Mr. Barkis seriously ill. He also learns that Little Em’ly now works as a seamstress and dreams of becoming a lady.
At the Peggotty houseboat, a happy moment occurs when Em’ly’s engagement to Ham Peggotty is announced. Everyone celebrates with joy. However, Steerforth makes a careless remark, suggesting Ham is not worthy of Em’ly. Though David ignores it, this shows a hidden flaw in Steerforth’s character.
During their stay, Steerforth spends time with Mr. Peggotty, while David revisits his childhood home. He feels both happiness and sadness remembering his early life. One evening, Steerforth appears troubled and admits he wishes he could guide himself better, but soon hides his feelings.
A turning point comes when Em’ly secretly meets Martha Endell, a “fallen woman.” This meeting suggests that Em’ly may also be facing moral confusion. She cries and feels she is not good enough, hinting at future trouble.
The next day, David and Steerforth leave Yarmouth. Steerforth leaves Littimer behind with unclear intentions, which creates suspicion. During their journey, David discusses his career plans. On Steerforth’s advice, he considers becoming a proctor.
In London, David meets Betsey Trotwood, who agrees to support his legal training, even though it is expensive. On the way to arrange his work, a mysterious man frightens Aunt Betsey, and she secretly gives him money. This incident suggests a hidden part of her past.
David begins his training at Doctors’ Commons under Mr. Spenlow and stays with Mrs. Crupp. Though hopeful at first, he soon feels lonely. When Steerforth visits, David arranges a dinner, but the evening becomes chaotic. He drinks too much wine, tries smoking, and behaves foolishly at the theatre. He even embarrasses himself in front of Agnes Wickfield.
The next morning, David feels ashamed and regrets his actions.
