David Copperfield Chapters 17 to 20 Quiz : David continues to stay at Doctor Strong’s school and slowly becomes more responsible. He writes to Peggotty and returns the money she had once lent him, showing his growing sense of honesty and duty. From her letter, he learns that the Murdstones have left his childhood home, which is now closed.
At school, David is sometimes visited by his aunt and Mr. Dick. During one visit, Mr. Dick tells him about a strange man who frightens Aunt Betsey and takes money from her. This creates a sense of mystery in the story.
David receives an invitation from Uriah Heep, a very humble-looking but cunning boy, to visit his house. At the Heep household, David feels uncomfortable as Uriah and his mother try to extract personal information from him, especially about Mr. Wickfield and Agnes. At this awkward moment, Mr. Micawber suddenly appears and saves David from the situation.
Later, David is surprised to see Micawber and Uriah becoming friendly. Micawber even praises Uriah, showing his foolish trust in people. Soon after, Micawber faces financial trouble again and leaves suddenly with his family.
David also remembers his school life, including his childish crushes. First, he likes a young girl, Miss Shepherd, but the feeling ends quickly. Later, he falls in love with Miss Larkins, an older woman, but she marries someone else. These incidents show David’s emotional growth and immaturity. By the end of this part, David becomes the head boy and realizes he is no longer a child. Agnes also appears more mature now.
Now at the age of seventeen, David is confused about his future. His aunt advises him to travel and gain experience. Before leaving, he visits Canterbury, where Agnes expresses concern about her father’s increasing drinking habit. David notices that Uriah Heep is often involved in Wickfield’s business during his weak moments.
At Doctor Strong’s house, another problem arises. Jack Maldon wishes to return from abroad, which creates silent tension, especially for Annie, Doctor Strong’s wife.
David then travels to London, where he tries to behave like a mature man but ends up appearing slightly childish. There, he meets his old friend James Steerforth, who is now confident and commanding. Steerforth helps David get better treatment at the hotel, showing his strong personality.
David visits Steerforth’s home and meets his proud mother and her companion, Rosa Dartle, who has a sharp and indirect way of speaking. Steerforth’s attitude towards lower-class people is clearly shown when he speaks about the Peggotty family with a sense of superiority.
