Section-Wise Weightage in RBSE Class 10 English

Section A: Reading Skills (20 Marks)

This section tests how well a student can read and understand a passage that they have never seen before. There will be two unseen passages in this section:

• Discursive Passage: This will be of 400-450 words. A discursive passage discusses an idea, opinion or argument on a topic.
• Case-Based Factual Passage: This will be of 200-250 words and will include a visual input such as statistical data, chart or graph.

The total length of both passages together will be between 600 and 700 words. From these passages, students will get objective type questions, very short answer questions and short answer type questions. These questions will check comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation and vocabulary. To do well here, students must practice reading unseen passages daily and learn how to pick out the main idea, supporting details and difficult words.

Section B: Writing Skill with Grammar (20 Marks)

This section has two parts: Grammar (8 marks) and Writing Skill (12 marks).

Grammar Topics (8 Marks)

Accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar in context will be tested through gap filling, editing and transformation exercises. This means students should not just learn grammar rules by heart, but should also practice applying them inside sentences and paragraphs.

Writing Skill (12 Marks)

There will be three writing tasks in this part:

1. Formal Letter: Based on a given situation, in 100-120 words.
2. Analytical Paragraph: Written on a given Map, Chart, Graph or Cues, in 100-120 words.
3. Report, Essay, Story or Blog: Written with the help of given outlines, in 100-120 words.

Students should practice writing within the word limit, because both very short and very long answers can lead to loss of marks. Using linking words and keeping the format correct is very important for formal letters and reports.

Section C: Language through Literature (40 Marks)

This is the biggest section of the RBSE Class 10 English paper and it is based on two prescribed NCERT books: First Flight and Footprints Without Feet. This section is further divided into two parts.

Part IV: Reference to the Context (6 Marks)

Students will get one prose extract from First Flight and one poetry extract from the prescribed poems. Along with comprehension questions, lexical items (word meanings and vocabulary) will also be tested from the prose extract. These questions will be a mix of objective questions, very short answer questions (one word or one sentence) and short answer type questions.

Part V: Short and Long Answer Questions (34 Marks)

(a) From First Flight (22 Marks)

• Short answer type questions from prose, poetry and the drama text, to assess interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation — 16 marks.
• Long answer type questions to assess creativity, imagination and extrapolation beyond the text, which may be based on a situation or plot from the text, with internal choice — 6 marks.

(b) From Footprints Without Feet (12 Marks)

• Short answer type questions to assess interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation — 6 marks.
• Long answer type questions on theme or plot, involving interpretation, extrapolation beyond the text, inference or character sketch, with internal choice — 6 marks.

Prescribed Books for RBSE Class 10 English 2027

The two textbooks prescribed by the board are:

• First Flight (Published by NCERT, New Delhi)
• Footprints Without Feet (Published by NCERT, New Delhi)

Step by Step Preparation Strategy for RBSE Class 10 English

1. Step 1: Read every chapter of First Flight and Footprints Without Feet at least two times, and note down difficult words with their meanings.
2. Step 2: Practice unseen passages daily, one discursive and one factual passage every week, to build reading speed and comprehension.
3. Step 3: Revise Determiners, Tenses, Subject-Verb Concord and Reported Speech with plenty of practice exercises, not just theory.
4. Step 4: Write at least one Formal Letter, one Analytical Paragraph and one Report or Essay every week, and check your word limit.
