Important Note: The combined word limit for both passages together will be 700 to 750 words. So both passages together will not be too long, but they will require careful reading.

The questions in this section will include objective type questions, very short answer type questions, and short answer type questions. This means you should practice a mix of MCQs and short written answers based on unseen passages regularly.

Section B: Creative Writing Skills and Grammar — 18 Marks

This is the section where many students lose easy marks simply because they do not know the correct format. Let us look at each part carefully.

Question 3: Notice / Formal or Informal Invitation and Reply — 4 Marks

This carries 4 marks, divided as: Format – 1 mark, Content – 2 marks, Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar – 1 mark. Students should practice writing notices for school events and formal as well as informal invitations with proper replies.

Question 4: Letter Writing — 4 Marks

This question will be based on verbal or visual input and the answer should be written in approximately 120 to 150 words. Two types of letters are mentioned in the syllabus:

• Application for a job along with bio-data or resume
• Letter to the editor, giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest

Marks distribution: Format – 1 mark, Organisation of Ideas – 1 mark, Content – 1 mark, Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar – 1 mark.

Question 5: Article or Report Writing — 6 Marks

This will be descriptive and analytical in nature, based on verbal or visual inputs, and should be answered in 120 to 150 words. Marks are divided as: Format – 1 mark, Organisation of Ideas – 2 marks, Content – 2 marks, Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar – 1 mark.

Question 6: Grammar — 4 Marks

The grammar topics mentioned specifically in the syllabus are:

• Conjunctions

Section C: Literature Text Book and Supplementary Reading Text — 40 Marks

This is the largest single question in the entire paper. Questions can be based on an incident, theme, passage, extract, or event from the chapters, and they are meant to test your ability to think beyond the text. The answers should be analytical and evaluative in nature.

Question 9: One Prose Extract — 5 Marks

A single extract from any prose chapter of Vistas will be given for analysis.

Question 10: Short or Long Answer Question — 6 Marks
