A Tale of Two Cities Book 2 Chapters 21 to 24 Quiz : In Chapter 21, the story moves forward by eight years to the year 1789. Charles Darnay and Lucie are living a peaceful life in England with their daughter, little Lucie. Their son has sadly passed away. Sydney Carton remains close to the family and visits them often. This event marks the beginning of the French Revolution. Dickens presents this mob as a powerful but uncontrolled force, full of anger and destruction.
In Chapter 22, the violence continues. The people capture Foulon, a hated official who once said that starving people should eat grass. He had tried to escape by faking his death. The angry crowd, led by Madame Defarge and her followers, drags him through the streets, stuffs grass in his mouth, and brutally kills him. Later, his son-in-law is also killed in the same violent manner. Though the people remain poor and hungry, they feel a sense of satisfaction and hope for a better future. Dickens shows how the mob loses all sense of mercy, especially highlighting the shocking behaviour of women in the crowd.
Chapter 23 shows how the revolution spreads from the city to the countryside. A group of rebels burns down the Evrรฉmonde chateau, which represents the power of the cruel aristocracy. The villagers do nothing to stop the fire, showing their deep hatred for the upper class. Gabelle, a tax collector, becomes the target of their anger and hides in fear. Dickens suggests that the oppression by the nobles has led to this violent reaction.
In Chapter 24, three more years pass. The revolution has removed the king and the nobles from power, but France is still unstable. Many French nobles have escaped to England and gather at Tellsonโs Bank. Charles Darnay learns that Gabelle has been imprisoned in France for serving him. Feeling responsible, Darnay decides to return to France to save him. He believes he can help and does not fully understand the danger. Before leaving, he writes letters to Lucie and Doctor Manette. His decision shows his strong sense of duty, but it also leads him towards great risk, as the revolutionaries still see him as an aristocrat.
